Who we are
What work are we doing at Gas Networks Ireland?
Delivering a safe, secure and efficient supply for customers
We ensure that over 720,000 natural gas customers receive a safe, efficient and secure supply of gas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Transporting gas through our network
We transport gas through our 14,617km pipeline network. As well as networks in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, we have pipelines in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. We do not own the gas; we transport it on behalf of suppliers and shippers.
Connecting new customers to the network
Through the New Connections Programme, Gas Networks Ireland continually brings the benefits of gas to new towns in line with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) Policy. We connect all customers to the network, regardless of their supplier.
Promoting gas as the fuel of choice
We actively promote gas as an energy of choice for homes, businesses and industry. We are keen to see greater utilisation of the national gas network and look for opportunities to expand the network where viable.
Investing in new business areas
As guardians of the national gas network we are working to deliver a cleaner energy future for Ireland. We are investing in new technologies such as compressed natural gas for transport and renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen.
Managing our gas emergency service
We manage a 24 hour gas emergency service handling over 14,000 call-outs a year.
Maintaining reliability and resilience
The natural gas network has demonstrated resilience and reliability through recent severe winter weather conditions, particularly during December and January 2010 when record subzero temperatures were recorded. For further detail on the gas network, read our reliability capacity document.
